Editorial cartooning
Bexley graduate national honoree Bexley native Nate Beeler has won the 2008 Berryman Award for Editorial Cartooning for work that appeared in The Examiner, a newspaper in the Washington area. Judges included National Press Foundation board members Peter Copeland, Deborah Howell and Sandra K. Johnson. The judges praised Beeler's "technical skill and sense of humor," adding, "His grasp of politics is excellent -- which is particularly important when you're drawing for an audience of Washington insiders." Beeler graduated from Bexley High School, where he served as a cartoonist and graphic artist for the student newspaper, The Torch. He attended American University in Washington, where he became the first cartoonist to win both the Charles M. Schulz Award and the John Locher Memorial Award for college cartooning in the same calendar year. In 2002, he told The Dispatch: "I feel you need to do something meaningful, something selfless -- whether it be through art, service, government. Journalism is a service to society -- especially cartoons." The cartoonist, 28, will receive the award during a Feb. 10 ceremony at the Hilton Washington hotel.
