Bexley students' design wins national contest

BY AOIFE CONNORS

WASHINGTON -- A group of eighth-graders from Bexley Middle School has won the 2009 Future City Competition, defeating students from 38 other middle schools across the country.

The Bexley students were declared champions in a contest Wednesday in which students created a computer model of a system in which water is conserved and recycled in homes.

The event, hosted by the National Engineers Week Foundation, was designed to generate student interest in science, engineering and technology that can promote green energy.

"They represented Ohio like you just couldn't imagine" said Peg Englehardt, a mathematics and science teacher at Bexley Middle School. "I am so proud of these students and their project."

The Bexley team was made up of six eighth-grade students: Three presented the project to the judges, and the other three assisted.

The three presenters were Abby Sharp, Tom Krajnak and Wyatt Peery; the three assistants were Elizabeth Maher, Aaron Hutchison and Truman Haycock.

Mark Sherman, chief deputy engineer of the Franklin County engineer's office, served as a volunteer mentor to the group.

The top prize is a weeklong trip to U.S. Space Camp in Alabama, as well as a 10-seat academic laboratory of engineering software for Bexley Middle School.

The students decided to base their project in Iceland so they could use geothermal energy and hydro power from waves and currents.

In January, the students won the regional finals in Ohio, winning a trip to Washington, D.C., from Saturday to Wednesday.

While in Washington, the students visited the Pentagon and the International Spy Museum.
